Why did you name your tarot deck “This Might Hurt” Tarot?
The phrase "This Might Hurt" is something that I have been using for my work for a while, long before I started drawing the tarot deck. I don't know if you've read any of my comics, but a lot of them are surreal dream-like exercises in trying to understand (and heal from) issues in my personal life through art. They are generally a bit sad, but also relatable, and hopefully overall hopeful. The phrase "this might hurt" felt like an apt descriptor of this work. It will be beautiful, and hopefully good for you, but it might hurt. Most things worthwhile might hurt. When I started reading, studying and drawing tarot I was struck that it is the same. It's going to tell you what you need to hear, and it doesn't care if it feels good, so long as it's good for you. It's a deck of cards, not a person, so it's not afraid to tell you that you need to take a real good hard look at yourself and your choices. That the future might not be bright - it might be HARD. But that's okay. Most things worth doing might be hard, most things worth doing might hurt.
When I started working on my own deck, the name felt like the perfect match. It might be beautiful, it might be painful. It will probably be both. There's always an edge of hope.
Can I get one of your designs as a Tattoo?
Most likely, yes! But please ask first by e-mailing me at IsabellaRotman@gmail.com. Unless the drawing is under the ownership or partial ownership of a third party, all I will ask is that you send me a photo of the tattoo when it is done and allow me to post it on my website and/or social media.

Would you like to draw my Children's Book, zine, and/or comic?
I am not in a position to take illustration jobs that will make money if and only if the book sells, and I require half payment up front. Regardless of rates, I don't usually have time to pick up a new project this large. Unfortunately projects like this take a long time. Generally I have 3-4 projects lined up ahead of me at all times.
While I enjoy and support self-publishing, my experience is in zines and comics, and not children's books. If you are looking for an illustrator for your children's book, I understand that the industry is much different there in regards to self-publishing, so I encourage you to reach out to publishers! Generally the publication industry for children's books discourages writers from finding their own illustrators. If a publisher accepts your pitch they will pair you with illustrators that they are already contracted with. Here is a quote from this helpful article for writers approaching illustrators, which I recommend you take a read through. "Editors and art directors don't just take your book and print it; they're active in creating it with you. Part of their job, and what they pride themselves in doing, is matching you up with the illustrator who's perfect for your story. If they've never worked with you AND you're pulling along an illustrator they've never worked with, that's two unknowns for them, and that's a much bigger risk than taking you on and pairing you with an illustrator they know does good work and meets deadlines."

Can I purchase your items at wholesale rates for a retail store?
If you have a copy of the Liminal 11 version of the deck, I will not be able to replace cards for you.
If you have a copy of the self-published version of the deck, yes, I'm happy to replace cards! I keep some “scrap” decks for this purpose, and if I have a spare of the card you need, I will replace it for you. Single cards are $4 + shipping. I'll need your shipping address and what edge color you would like (pearl or black.) Payment can be made over PayPal, I'll send you an invoice.
One thing to be aware of is that decks are cut in a stack all at once. So a card from a different deck may be a different size from your deck by a fraction of a millimeter. This doesn't seem like much but could result in the replacement card not aligning perfectly when the deck is in a stack, almost like a marked card that you can tell by feel when you run your fingers down the side of the deck. This may mean replacing a single card doesn’t work for you. That is for you to decide.

Do you do discount or pro bono work for non-profits and good causes?
Yes, I often do work for causes I strongly believe in for a discounted rate. I have a limited amount of time and money that I am able to devote to this though, and most of it is already dedicated to sex education and LGBTQ causes that I strongly support. So while I have limited time to offer to new projects, I encourage you to message me! I may have an idea for how to help out, and if I truly believe in what you are doing, I'm likely to find a way to lend a hand or at least post about it on social media.
